US area codes
Find out where any US area code is and which cities it covers. You can also get a business phone number in that area code, answered around the clock by an AI that books appointments, takes messages, and hands off to you whenever a caller asks for a person.

Getting a local number for your business
- 1
Choose the area code your customers recognise
Pick the code covering the area you actually serve. Local numbers are answered more often than unfamiliar or toll-free ones, which matters most for services people expect to be nearby: plumbing, HVAC, salons, restaurants, and auto repair.
- 2
Keep your existing number if you have one
You do not have to replace a number that is already on your van, your listings, and your reviews. Forward it instead, either always or only when nobody picks up, and your customers carry on dialing what they already know.
- 3
Tell the AI about your business once
Hours, services, and prices go in during setup. After that it answers what you charge, whether you cover a caller’s neighbourhood, and when you can get there, rather than reading from a script.
- 4
Every call gets answered from then on
Day or night, at the same per-minute rate, in your business name. It books into your calendar, texts links callers ask for, and transfers to a person whenever someone asks.
How area codes work
What an area code actually is
An area code is the first three digits of a ten-digit North American phone number, and it identifies the geographic region the number was issued in. The system is called the North American Numbering Plan, and it covers the United States, Canada, and twenty other countries and territories. Codes were originally assigned so that the busiest regions got the codes that were fastest to dial on a rotary phone, which is why New York City received 212 and Los Angeles 213.
Why two area codes can cover the same street
When a region runs out of available numbers, the phone system adds capacity in one of two ways. A split divides the region geographically and gives part of it a new code, which forces everyone in that part to change their number. An overlay adds a second code across the same area instead, so existing numbers stay exactly as they are and new numbers get the new code. Overlays are now strongly preferred, which is why neighbours on the same street can have different area codes, and why dialing all ten digits became necessary in overlay regions.
Does an area code still mean the caller is local?
Not reliably. Mobile numbers keep their area code when someone moves, so a 212 number may belong to someone who left New York a decade ago. Number portability means a business can keep its number when it changes carrier or address. And caller ID can be spoofed on any code, which is how scam calls appear to come from your own area. Treat an area code as a strong hint about where a number was issued, not as proof of where the caller is standing.
Choosing an area code for your business
A local area code signals to customers that you are nearby, and local numbers get answered more often than unfamiliar or toll-free ones, particularly for services people expect to be local like plumbing, salons, and restaurants. If you serve one town, take that town code. If you serve several regions, some businesses take a number in each and route them all to the same place. Toll-free codes such as 800 and 844 read as national rather than local, which is useful for a nationwide company and unhelpful for a neighbourhood one.
Common questions about business numbers
- Can I get a phone number in an area code where I am not located?
- Yes. A number in any area code can be used from anywhere, and businesses routinely take a number in a region they serve rather than one they sit in. A contractor covering three counties might hold a number in each so every customer sees a local caller ID.
- Is a local number better than a toll-free number?
- For a local business, usually yes. Local numbers signal that you are nearby and get answered more often, which matters for services people expect to be local such as plumbing, salons, and restaurants. Toll-free numbers read as national, which suits a company serving the whole country and works against a neighbourhood one.
- Do I have to give up my current business number?
- No. Most businesses keep the number already printed on their van, their listings, and their reviews, and simply forward it. You can forward every call, or only the ones nobody picks up, so your team still answers when they are free.
- How quickly can I have a number answering calls?
- Usually within a few minutes. You choose the area code during signup, enter your hours, services, and prices, and the AI starts answering. There is no hardware to install and no engineer visit.
- What happens to calls outside business hours?
- They are answered the same way, at the same per-minute rate. There is no after-hours surcharge, so a call at 2am costs what a call at 2pm costs, and the AI can transfer a genuine emergency to whoever is on call.
- Can one business have numbers in several area codes?
- Yes. Each location can have its own number, its own hours, and its own knowledge, while everything reports into one dashboard. Additional locations are billed per location per month.
What the number comes with
It is not a menu tree and it is not voicemail. It is a real conversation that ends with a booking, an order, or a message in your hand.
Answers every call
Day, night, weekends, holidays. It picks up on the first ring in your business name, and never puts anyone on hold.
Books the job
It checks your real availability and writes the appointment straight into your calendar while the caller is still on the phone.
Texts what they asked for
Your menu, booking page, delivery link, or a quote. The caller gets it on their phone before they hang up.
Wins back quiet customers
It calls the customers you already have when they are overdue, and books them back in. That is the part nobody else does.
Do not take our word for it. Call it.
Hear the AI answer a real call, in a real business, right now. No signup, no card, nothing to install. Most people decide within about thirty seconds of hearing it talk.
